  • A minimum 2.5 (4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average in undergraduate work.
  • Minimum GRE subtest scores of 450 on the verbal section and 450 on either the quantitative or analytical section; alternatively, a minimum score of 44 on the MAT.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Requirements pertinent to the student's intended major area of emphasis:
    • Composition: satisfactory sample scores for at least three different types of compositions
    • Music Education: L-4 certification by the State of Georgia or its equivalent
    • Music History & Literature: a satisfactory sample research paper
    • Performance: a satisfactory audition that includes compositions from at least three different periods
  • Acceptable proficiency (undergraduate exit level) in music theory (part-writing, analysis, and ear-training) and music history, determined through a test administered by the Department of Music. For an emphasis in Music History and Literature, prospective students must also demonstrate, through a test administered by the Department of Music, reading proficiency in one foreign language, preferably German or French. Candidates in voice must demonstrate proficiency in diction in both English and at least two foreign languages during their audition. In addition, vocal performance candidates must demonstrate basic undergraduate proficiency levels in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in German, French, Italian and in basic keyboard skills.

Provisional

  • Minimum GRE subtest scores of 400 on the verbal section and 400 on either the quantitative or analytical section; alternatively, a minimum score of 35 on the MAT. For these lower scores to be considered, the candidate should have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
  • Students admitted provisionally due to lack of proficiency in the items listed in #6 above will not be permitted to take more than 12 semester hours toward the degree until proficiency in all areas is established.
