Financial Aid

Georgia Southern University offers a comprehensive program of financial aid for students who, without such aid, would be unable to continue their education. Through this program, an eligible student may receive one or more types of financial aid.  Please note ñ Except of the Graduate Assistantship and Out-of-Country Tuition Waiver, International graduate students are not eligible to receive other financial aid.  

Contact the Financial Aid Department personnel at (912) 681-5413, for help with questions and problems. There are six (6) forms of financial aid available: 

1. Graduate Assistantships - The College of Graduate Studies has a number of graduate assistantship position within the various departments on campus. Graduate assistants are expected to work 20 hours a week, and are compensated with monthly stipends and reduced tuition rates. 

2. Employment - Three employment programs are available to students. The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) provides jobs to students who qualify for financial aid. Students normally work two hours per day. The Job Location and Development Program (JLD) provides information about part-time job opportunities available in the Statesboro area. All currently enrolled students may participate in the program as there are no financial eligibility requirements. The Institutional Work Program helps students locate part-time employment on campus. There are no eligibility requirements. 

3. Fellowships-Similar in many ways to scholarships and grants, these programs are most often established to assist graduate students and sometimes involve a work obligation. 

4. Grants - State and privately funded grant programs are available to students enrolled at Georgia Southern University. 

5. Loans - Several loan programs are available from state and federal agencies, civic clubs and private and public foundations. Each incorporates its own eligibility and repayment requirements. 

6. Scholarships - A variety of state and federal scholarship programs as well as as array of scholarship programs established and funded through the Georgia Southern University Foundation are available.

It is your responsibility to follow all instructions and submit all required materials to the address indicated in the application form. Graduate Assistantship Summary

  1. The graduate assistantship serves two purposes: to facilitate the professional growth and development of the individual through supervised work experience, and to contribute to the teaching and research endeavors of the institution.

  2. An applicant must have unqualified admission to the College of Graduate Studies under the "Regular" (not Provisional) classification.

  3. The graduate assistant must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

  4. A graduate student holding an appointment as an assistant must register and earn credit for a minimum of nine (9) semester hours and a maximum of twelve (12) semester hours of graduate course work leading to the degree each semester in which the student holds the assistantship.

  5. Although students can, with approval of the advisor and the Graduate Dean, enroll in undergraduate courses, it should be noted these courses will not constitute part of the mandatory hours of graduate work per semester.

  6. If an Incomplete (I) grade is received, the graduate assistant must remove the "I" during the semester following the semester in which the "I" was recorded.

  7. Each graduate assistant is expected to work 20 hours a week as designated by the assigned unit.

  8. The stipend for the academic year 2002-2003 is a minimum of $5000. Payment is made on a monthly basis beginning late September. The stipend is not tied to an hourly rate.

  9. Assistantships are occasionally offered during the Summer semester.

  10. Applications for re-appointment must be submitted annually.

  11. A graduate assistant choosing to resign or terminate his employment must submit a letter of resignation to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

  12. Graduate assistants qualify for a special fee of $25.00 plus an activity fee of $304.00 and a technology fee of $38.00 for a total of $367.00.
    University fees are not waived.


Graduate Assistant Applications, Procedures and Stipulations:

In order to apply for an assistantship students must:

  1. Secure a Graduate Assistant Application from the College of Graduate Studies, OR

  3. Complete the application and return it to the Office of the College of Graduate Studies

  4. Inform the department head or coordinator of graduate studies in the department in which employment is sought.

  5. Submit applications annually. Renewal of a previous year's contract is not automatic. Each year the student must compete with other applicants for a position; however, experience is a valuable asset.

  6. Deadline for application is March 1st for Fall Semester


Graduate Student Professional Development Fund

Monies from the College Fee have been allocated to establish a Graduate Student Professional Development Fund. Two categories of funding are available to assist graduate students. Guidelines and applications for both categories of funding are available in the College of Graduate Studies.

  • A. Graduate Student Professional Travel Grants: Students may apply for assistance to attend professional meetings. Funds will be allocated via a competitive review process and priority will be given to persons presenting papers and/or receiving awards at such meetings.

  • B. Graduate Student Research Grants: Students may apply for small grants viewed as seed money to aid in research projects which are the bases for theses or other reports/projects required as part of degree programs. All projects should be formulated and initiated by the student.
